Understanding Wheelchair Ramp Specifications

A properly designed wheelchair ramp ensures safe and independent access for people with mobility disabilities. The ADA standard of 1:12 slope ratio means that for every 1 inch of vertical rise, you need 12 inches of ramp run.

For example, if you have a 24-inch step, you will need a 288-inch (24 feet) ramp to meet ADA standards. Ramps should also include handrails, edge protection, and level landings at the top and bottom.
